Moldova is a small country wedged between Romania and the Ukraine—and it’s where Valeriia Karaman was born, with big, giant eyes; heavy brows; and a puffy kisser. It should come as no surprise that she started as a model, working with Emporio Armani and Diesel, then headed into acting—but you might be interested to know she’s kind of an all-around Renaissance woman who plays piano, sings in a girl band that is more punk than pop and more pop than punk, an artist who paints and photographs, and she also sometimes interviews other people (just go with it, it’s on her Instagram page). She also appears in really weird movies—not to stay that’s a bad thing, because it isn’t. As the mermaid in the drama, fantasy, horror movie The Lighthouse (2019), her naked breast gets felt up by Robert Pattinson. The film is shot in black and white, and it is visually stunning—so much so that cinematographer Jarin Blasche was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the flick. All told, the movie got 34 wins and 135 nominations from various film organization and festivals around the world. It also stars Willem Dafoe, and he and Pattinson go bonkers on an isolated island as lighthouse keepers—thus, where the weird comes in. Romanian.
